The “Unicorn” Myth and the Seismic Solution.

Recent data from Axios Pro Rata confirms what many have long suspected: the traditional venture capital market is remarkably top-heavy and increasingly fragile.
VCs have been overpaying to get into “hot” deals for years, and their infrastructure enabled this, because people who couldn’t get into the first offering fought their way into a subsequent round. So, each subsequent round pushed the perceived value higher, even if the underlying metrics showed something different.
The result is that many companies perceived initially as unicorns – VC speak for “hot tickets” – now are worth significantly less than their paper valuations suggest. Estimates are that this overvaluing affects more than one in four VC companies. Even more striking is that 52% of all unicorn value is concentrated in just ten companies. For decades, the VC world used “exclusivity” as a shield, locking everyday investors out of a market that—it turns out—wasn’t always as valuable as advertised.
This reflects a more traditional venture model, which has often prioritized exclusive access over sustainable, long-term value creation.
